Updated FOS online technical note on debt collection

The Financial Ombudsman Service has published an updated version of its online technical note on debt collection.

The note sets out the FOS' approach to complaints regarding the collection of debts by debt recovery agencies arising from regulated consumer credit or consumer hire agreements.  It does not cover complaints where the lender itself is collecting the debt.

Debt collectors are licensed by the OFT and debt collection in relation to regulated consumer credit or consumer hire agreements is within the scope of the FOS' jurisdiction.  The FOS is able to consider complaints regarding debt collection events that occurred on or from 6^th April 2007 (when consumer credit businesses came under its jurisdiction).
